gold is the new black.

gold is the new black

I can’t think of anyone that is more obsessed with gold than I am right now. I am so absorbed with the beauty of all things gold that I have actually gone so far as to say “gold is the new black”. That’s a big deal.

I’m by no means an expert on fashion and color trends and what not, but I do know when something is a big deal. I’m pretty easily excited, but what I feel about gold is way more than just my usual excitement.

By the grace of God, and some very lucky genetics, I was blessed with the ability to wear gold and silver, separately and at the same time. How neat is that? Apparently it’s pretty uncommon. [#gingersFTW] Something about my naturally gold highlighted red hair [my hair stylist's words, not mine] and alabaster skin lets me wear both simultaneously — and I definitely do! It’s like wearing black and brown together. People get all itchy about it, but it’s totally a thing if you can pull it off. If I had to pick one or the other though, I will always pick gold. Always.

coconut oil will save your life.

Okay maybe not save your life, but it will definitely make your life smell better and feel better and look better. Seriously. Let me list all the ways I have used coconut oil:

moisturizer // lotion for skin and cuticles
deep conditioner
face wash
lip balm
reduce appearance of scars
stop itching of bug bites
sweetener for coffee
added to breakfast smoothie for flavor and satiate appetite
clean teeth and gums
[plus more than I can't even remember!]

coconut oilI’m not even kidding you right now. I have done all of those things.

I was a skeptic at first. I mean the stuff is white and looks pretty solid. Kinda wonky and strange, if you ask me. All the oils I’ve ever come into contact with have been liquids. So my first reaction was to move on and pretend I never decided to give it a go. My second thought was “oh what the heck,” so I bought a jar of Central Market Organics Virgin Coconut Oil to try. I had done a bit of research and found that unrefined and expeller pressed was the best.

What appears as a solid, isn’t so solid. It’s actually really soft. Almost instantly after coming into contact with your skin, it melts into a smooth liquid that is easily spread across your skin or through your hair.

NOTE | I wouldn’t recommend traveling with any kind of oil at this time. I haven’t figured out a way to do this yet. After going on vacation and turning the A/C off, I came home to an 80 degree apartment and a completely melted jar of coconut oil. To be honest, I thought someone had cleaned out my jar while I was gone. I have the weirdest train of thoughts.

And don’t be scared about using an oil on your face. People are so afraid of oils, but there’s nothing to worry about. Putting oil on your face will not give you pimples [unless the oil is riddled with bacteria, in which case, the oil would still not be the cause of your blemishes]. There’s some fancy science reason that it’s okay to use oil on your face. The gist of it is that using oil on your skin breaks down the oils on your face while also moisturizing your skin. Yes you read that correctly, you can wash and moisturize your face with one product.

<< am I the only one that noticed I said oil / oils eight times? eeek. >>

If anyone shows interest in using coconut oil as a face wash and moisturizer, I will gladly put together a “how to” post.

P.S. What are favorite “weird” beauty products?

Inspiration for Transformation

Recently, I decided I really ought to recognize those ladies (and their blogs) that inspired my passion for fashion. I thought it would take me longer to decide who these Top 5 ladies would be, but that was far from reality. My ultimate goal from sharing these ladies and their respective blogs with y’all would be that you too can be inspired the way I was, or even in a different way. I don’t expect anything from acknowledging them, but I feel that they really do deserve the credit for the transformation of this blog, as well as more than just a hyperlink to their website from my Favorites page.

So here we go.. Introducing the five ladies (and their blogs), in no particular order, that I find to be the most inspiring and encouraging on my road to discovering my style and fashion creativity!

These ladies all obviously have one thing in common:

They are f a b u l o u s.

I am 100% certain that they have other similarities, but I think it is their differences that really enables them to inspire me even more in a variety of ways! Every single one of these ladies are clearly externally beautiful, but what makes them different (from each other and other bloggers) is that they are beautiful on the inside as well. Each has their own thoughts and opinions and views on style, fashion and so much more.

I am going to be perfectly honest. I know that all five of these women have a lot going on in their own lives, but a little part of me would get such joy if they did see this and read this. I don’t know how I would know if they even did, but the idea that they could is just really super exciting to me. Hehe!

Since I have made it so incredibly easy for each of you to access their blogs and social media sites, I expect that to happen! I promise that y’all will not be disappointed. I have yet to be.

Super Fantastic Target Finds

three shoes

I mean, who doesn’t?

What gets even better is that I think I might love Target even MORE now. Yes, you read that right. MORE. Check out some of the awesome deals I found at Target today. I still can’t even believe it myself!

Cheetah print loafers: $20

Black sandals: $14

Pink and gray bowling shoes: $6

six dollar shoes

And yes, you did read that correctly. That was not a typo.

I bought what I am calling bowling shoes for only SIX DOLLARS.

By some luck of the draw, they were actually my size. I still can’t even believe it!

pink flower

Next comes this precious little pink porcelain flower that I found for only $8. It has a few chips, but nothing that is super obvious. I decided it was worth the small investment.

And finally, if you didn’t see from my last post. This $17 three shelf bookcase was an amazing steal and even more worth the price than this adorable flower. I honestly felt like I was stealing from Target by only paying $17. I swear, those shelves last for years and are so little maintenance, and dare I say, cute?

So this morning my happiness with the outfit I ended up wearing to run errands was a lot closer to the dissatisfied side of the spectrum. Basically all morning I internally judged myself for what I had decided to wear as I shopped around for shelving for my bedroom.

But the weirdest thing happened. I had decided to assemble the $17 three shelf bookcase I had bought from Target (what a steal, might I add), which resulted in putting my hair up in a messy bun to keep it out of my face while I worked. Here’s where the weirdness occurred. I suddenly was in love with my outfit. I don’t know what happened or why that worked. But it did. I wonder if it had something to do with showing off more of the details on my shirt, which I absolutely adore, or simply because my hair was out of my face and my pearls were on full display.

Magenta and White Shirt: Banana Republic || Black Shorts: Gap || Watch: Fossil

Naturally this put me in a great mood so I completed my shelf and started adding some things to the shelves.

And so everyone knows, I’m working on an awesome post about the top five bloggers I find to be most inspiring for myself. Be sure to look for that later in this week! Hopefully sooner rather than later. I want it to be perfect and perfection takes more time than I wish it did.

Pink & Chambray

Chambray button up: Merona (Target) || Pink patterned chino shorts: Merona (Target) || I am also wearing my pink Heather watch by Fossil and crystal flower bracelet by J.Crew

I’m currently on the way to Houston Methodist Hospital where my grandmother is being admitted into the ER for a heart valve issue. Which leads me to my question: what do you wear to visit someone in the hospital?

I thought, of course, something with a little color to be cheerful but not completely obnoxious and overstated. What better way to dim the brightness from these shorts than with a chambray button-up shirt? Agreed? Agreed. I also didn’t wear too much jewelry. And especially nothing too sparkly. I hope this suffices!

Sorry this has been so short but I am in love with these pink patterned shorts and I had to share them with you!
